What percentage of donated money reaches the poor?
pa v asked:
If you have information about various funds and their money management or just any other relevant information about how much money that people donate actually reaches the goal (poor in Africa, etc) I would be grateful for your help.
also i forgot to mention that i am particularly interested in charity fraud cases. Any famous ones that lost a lot of donors’ money?

There are some charities (like ChildFund) that advertise how much of a donation reaches the poor. (like 80%) Also, I recently saw a commercial. You know those cheap laptops that people are trying to get out to Africa? A snack brand is advertising a “Get a laptop, Give a laptop” sweepstakes. If you win a laptop, a laptop also goes to Africa. Depending on how long it takes to win a laptop, as much as 2000% of your donation ($5 for a $100 laptop) goes to Africa.

the money reaching the poor means nothing
you want to ask what percentage of donated money reaches the poor in forms of goods, that is food, clothing or whatever
advertising, paid people, paid trucking, postage paid return evelopes, toll free numbers and all the rest add up
it’s the value of the goods that the poor receives that counts
some ‘charities’ have regional or district paid administrators at 50,000 a year plus great bennies plus pay for advertising and the rest and only 20 cents of each dollar donated actually becomes food or clothing or whatever for the poor
some do better with much more of each buck actually becoming food or clothes for the poor
if they are an IRS 501 c 3 or similiar they must provide you with their tax forms and everything else either by mailing it to you or posting it in the paper or online
you will be very surpised to see just how little donated money goes to the poor in products and services by many big name charities but a few are very good
do your research well, it takes time and patience and donate only to those that really do provide for the poor and not to their well paid administrators
Feed the Children is one of the best and they freely make public all of their accounting, All , and are often named America’s best charity and the only one that I send a check to each year

Completely depends on each charity/non profit. That’s why I donate locally; I can easily choose which one to support (is it 100% volunteer? how much goes to actually helping people rather than wages, benefits, or administrative costs). There are several websites that look at the percentages of money donated vs put into programs, but I think these are just quick brush strokes. For example, is purported to be one of the best. But again, I just donate locally.
